Not many people know this but I was born into a religion where it was forbidden to dance. No school dances or proms allowed. My best friend (not in the church) took me to my first dance and I felt completely out of place. No clue on how to move my body to the beat. She made it fun for me though. Showing me that it’s ok to dance like a goofball and not to care what anyone thought. She was (and still is) a great dancer but she danced around with silliness on purpose for me. What a good friend, hey?
I ended up leaving the church (officially) at about 16 years old. A topic for another time…
As an adult I found a dance fitness class that changed the course of my life. I was shy and afraid at first but I ended up falling in love with it. Fitness and fun???? It was totally my jam! I went faithfully to this class every week. And when my instructor got a new job and moved away I was super sad.
I ended up deciding to get licensed to teach my own classes. Keep in mind, I was absolutely terrified of this. I’m a total introvert, don’t like to be the center of attention, and don’t like people staring at me. Being in a dance class as a participant was scary enough. Teaching a class was a whole other animal.
I had these thoughts:
1. ‘Who do you think you are to do this?’
2. ‘You don’t even know how to dance.’
3. ‘You will never be able to pull this off.’
4. ‘You don’t even know how to teach a class.’
5. ‘People are going to judge you.’
6. ‘Everyone is going to be staring at you.’
But I told my brain to shut up and pushed myself anyways. Years later, I’m still teaching my classes, meeting some really cool peeps, and having a blast doing it. So when I tell new people that ‘anyone can do this’, I really mean it.
The reason why I am telling you this is pushing yourself to do new and uncomfortable things IS scary, yes, but it can also have a tremendously positive impact on your life. This can be applied to anything for you, not just dance or fitness.
